Lululemon mural project

It's been some time since my last post and I had been meaning to post this. Late last year, I was commissioned to do a mural for Lululemon to coincide with their opening of their flagship store. We had to pick one of the lines from their manifesto. It was a daunting challenge as I hadn't done anything of this scale before and it came during my final weeks of school, so it was a stressful time.

After much delay and bad weather, I got it completed with the help of some friends and it was a nice way to end the year. The mural is along South Bridge Road at the start of Boat Quay.

Ink job.

Two weeks ago, I was commissioned to do a text tattoo design of the phrase Les Lieux de Memoire which translated means Between memory and history. And she wanted a specific calligraphic style and I did a first and then she specified that she wanted it to go with a tattoo of a quill that she already had, and so I changed the form which is shown below.

Commisioned : logo

Was commissioned by a friend last month to create a logo/branding and to also produce namecards for her cupcake business in a pink and purple color scheme. She makes yummy cupcakes!! Am still in the midst of creating her facebook page but you should check her instagram out here.

Commissioned : wedding invitation.

I'd always wanted to do the whole wedding thing. The invites, decorations, planning. Maybe not so much the planning, but rather being involved in the creative part of it. But I do know it isn't easy. Cos you're responsible for making a girl's lifelong dream come true. You have to make her dream wedding a reality. You're basically her fairy godmother. And whilst I'm not one of those girls who've been dreaming about the details of her dream wedding down to a T. I know I'd definitely want my wedding to be DIY. and colorful. and in a garden. with fairy lights streaming from tree to tree. And since Singapore's weather is erratic, maybe I'd take my Indonesian friend's advice and hire a rain bomoh (a shaman), so he can dance the rain away.

Anyway, in pursuit of being involved in weddings somehow. (side note: I used to shoot weddings for work. but there was the occassional friend who needed my services). I was commissioned to design a wedding invitation earlier this year. The bride wanted a Victorian theme. I used gold and a very faint tiffany blue for the color scheme, and had a lace damask pattern to match closely to the bride's dress.

Commissioned work completed.

How my commmissioned work looks like completed. It now resides on a bedroom wall somewhere in the south of singapore. It really is tough bringing it up on buses and having to try to avoid jostling with the rush hour crowd.

Commissioned work

Am currently working on a 36" by 28" inch fabric piece on commission. I am using 100% pure organic wool which i ordered from here. If you've worked with felt before, you'd know that they only sell Acrylic or wool blended felt in Singapore. I had asked a couple of other shops and they all say because of the high cost of wool felt, they don't bring them in.  Jennifer of Wool Finch Studio, makes her own felt and hand dyes them into all these pretty colors that you don't find in Spotlight, Daiso or Art Friend and it's really soft compared to the acrylic ones.

Anyhoo, I underestimated the time it would take to work on this piece, thinking I could complete it in 2 days. I was wrong. I'm only about 60-70% done and its back to the office tomorrow. I hope I get to complete it over the next 2 nights. Its been awhile since I had blistered fingers from hand sewing. I swear it's cathartic.

The past 4 days have been really productive and I feel like I've found my joy and peace, out of the love of doing what I do. It'll be another 3 and a half weeks of ad agency life before I resign and go back to working as a freelance designer at home and focusing more on my personal art projects. It's quite sad though, cos I really love my colleagues and I'm gonna miss the lunches and laughter and jokes with them. But I'm doing this for me. I can't wait!!

Have a good week ahead!

Underneath your shadow, I find my refuge.

I was commissioned to do an A3 piece with custom text which was a line from a song by an old local band, Surreal and also derived from a psalm in the bible.

A2 Quote Drawing

Normally i'd do an A4 sized drawing, but a friend asked if he could commission me to make a larger one for his new home. This one is in A2 and a quote I came up with years ago. This one took about 12 hours or so and I ran out of ink along the way. What a task?! But am proud of it nonetheless.
