Artmire - Julia Chang

"brooklyn based artist julia chiang uses a wide variety of materials in her sculpture and installation based work, including nostalgic and sweet ring pops. the colourfoul candy has been used by chiang in a number of works often employed as pixels spelling out words. the candy jewels atop the rings melts over time under gallery lights and slowly drips down the walls. the melted sugar stains the surfaces it touches. one of chiang's largest ring pop installation was presented at this year's art basel miami in the group show 'it ain't fair' at ohwow gallery and can be seen in these photos."

stencil project. May 4-6 2012 in KL.

It was one of those ideas that kinda pop in your head. I'd been working with text and typo for awhile now and while there are possibly many different ways to execute it, it didn't really take off until I thought about this one. With the help of a colleague's plotting machine, I was able to have these cut out in the quickest time when I didn't have the luxury of free time and plus I had been sick twice within in a short period of time.

KL was always that quick "get away" place. A place that was foreign yet familiar to me. It was a great 3 days away, mostly knowing that all my work back home was complete and I had nothing else to worry about and so it truly was a holiday.

The work below served as a the backdrop to the previous stencil photo.

We got ourselves markers and spray paints and while I intended them for canvas, I couldn't help but try it out and discover what "tagging" felt like. I felt silly. Maybe, it would've been better had I been tagging my old name, quietcore.

Nixon Art Mosh - September 11th 2011

I really like the effects of the spotlight on my work. I noticed a lot of people
touching my work though.

Nixon Art Mosh 2011

I will be showcasing this piece tomorrow at the Nixon Art Mosh at Old School. This picture isn't great though. haha

Commissioned pieces

I recently did a series of 4 posters for a nice lady from New York for her to hang in her classroom. They took quite awhile for me to do, especially since it was in A2 size. I must say, that I really (x infinity) need a proper workspace (aka throw away a lot of stuff and get a table.)

Work in progress

Pardon the lack of a better photo, but I couldn't find my card reader, so I snapped this instead with my iphone. This is a work in progress for a show I'm invited to be a part of which will happen in Mid Sept. I'm pretty excited as it will be the first show I will take part in as an artist and not a photographer. I'm a late bloomer, considering I graduated from NAFA ten years ago. It's amazing to recall my journey here, for the changes of interests over the years and then realising that, "Hey you know what, I like this. I love doing this. I love creating and making stuff."

The above piece is made up of strips of book cover fabric, which was used for an in-store display from when I worked at Bookbinders. They were gonna dispose of it, but being the hoarder that I am, I kept it, amongst other wonderful treasure trash. :)

I wrote a short poem and an excerpt of it will be part of the art.

I'm not sure if I could ever produce a work of art that held some political reference or meaning, although I admire my artist friends who are very capable of doing so and produce really awesome art. I'm not saying never, but I've always tried to stay real and organic in my writings and pieces. I'm emotionally driven and lately with the changes in my life, they have spurred much thought and ideas into things I want so much to do. Positively.

* I will eventually get around to changing the above pic to a better one.

Fight the good fight.

Worked on this A2 piece over the weekend. Its one of four drawings that I was commissioned to do for a lady from NYC. Pretty pleased with how it turned out. Although I really should get a drawing table, cos working in bed is bad for my already problematic back.

I have been invited to be a part of two group exhibitions coming up. It'll be my first in a really long while that isn't photography related.
Good things are happening and I feel blessed. And I'm getting more and more inspired by the things around me.

Pardon the grainy photo, I've been shooting alot with my iphone these days cos of its convenience and pocket fit.

Have a good week ahead, folks. Check back soon. I promise more updates. :)

Sticker project

I've been bitten by the creative bug that lately I've had an insane urge to create. The itch had to be scratched. And I decided to do a personal sticker project. Using lines of encouragement or confessions, whichever I felt could relate to me in a way cos I take pride in being "personal". I made enough stickers to start my very own sticker party(not!), and went on to spread these words around. I am still in the process of making more. I've been thinking of a new series of posters as well and I just might have them painted on canvas as I still have plenty untouched from my last purchase from a closing down sale. I like this creative streak and I hope it lasts longer.

Til the next update...

Don't you just hate when no-show socks keep rolling down your feet when you walk.

"I think no show socks are pointless especially when they don't show up."

Geddit?

Kult magazine #5: Fear

My work is featured in the new issue of Kult magazine. Issue #5 - Fear. My fear was sociophobia.

At the building where the band was playing, there were all these painted-by-artists cable spools, which I think is an awesome way of recycling those things and I love giant cable spools. The wonders of the many furnitures one can make with it. But anyhoo, this was by far the best one ever!! With a big rusty needle and rope thread. :D

Jersey scarf numero uno.

Made myself a jersey necklace/scarf last week when I was down with hives. Sewing or doing crafty things seem to be the one definite thing that can calm me down anytime and it also helped distract me from scratching my itches. I know it was meant to be a recycled project, but most XL tshirts that I had were black and I wanted color, so I went to Spotlight and got me some. I received many compliments on the scarf, even from random strangers. :) In my BAGGU bag, there's more jersey knit material. A little disappointed with the available colors though. But... I've already made scarf #2. Happy Dappy!!!

Rob Ryan

I love Rob Ryan's work. All those intricate papercuts, I have mucho respecto for dis guy (sudden mexican accent). Which kinda reminds me that I have his book somewhere that I have yet to open that I got from the Wood Would shop at the Mandarin Gallery a couple of months ago.

I like keeping my hands busy, though most times I'm frozen stuck infront of the computer. I made an attempt at doing a papercut but on a much smaller, simpler scale for tryouts, a year ago. I haven't really been productive on the craft front lately so I'm posting works I did previously.
Those are lyrics from Bon Iver's In The Woods. :)
A few months ago, my boss at work had brought this book to my table thinking I might be interested and I immediately fell in like(not love.).

Niels "Shoe" Meulman is an internationally known artist, graphic designer, and art director. Meulman began tagging Shoe in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18.

That last image is just awesome and raw. I have this affinity for serif text and "some" calligraphy and squiggly lines infused together. *Note: I have a faith/hope ambigram on my right wrist.* And I have always thought about getting another text tattoo done and seeing that image, made me want it more. Unfortunately, I doubt I will be getting any ink jobs done anytime soon 'cos I have other plans to save money up for. But, would you look at that!!
